Naruto Episode 039 Super Eyebrows Jealous "Lion Combo" is Born!

The episode begins with the beginning of Sasuke and Yoroi’s preliminary battle. As we saw at the end of last episode, Sasuke, at first, has a definitely difficult match. First, Sasuke is unable to use his Sharingan due to the cursed seal, and to make things worse, his opponent, Yoroi, possesses a chakra-absorbing technique, which he uses freely, to Sasuke’s disadvantage.

Orochimaru uses this battle as Sasuke’s opportunity to fully rely on Orochimaru’s cursed seal for power, once his chakra is depleted. However, with an amazing feat of strength, Sasuke finally kicks Yoroi off, and begins to dodge and counter attack. Even though Sasuke has woken up to the battle, Yoroi has already taken a substantial amount of chakra, greatly weakening Sasuke.

Yoroi continues to force Sasuke into a close combat battle, one that favor’s Yoroi and his deadly palms. Everyone viewing the battle begins to lose confidence in Sasuke, except, of course, for Naruto.

Sasuke, then, uses taijutsu abilities, which no one thought he had possessed. He seemingly disappears then reappears as he sends Yoroi flying with an upwards kick; while in the air Sasuke utilizes the shadow dance technique, allowing him to follow Yoroi’s air movement. But just when Sasuke is about to finish him, the cursed seal begins to spread. Sasuke seems to be helpless, which is what Kakashi thinks as well; at least until Sasuke, luckily, forces the cursed seal back into dormancy.

Now, Sasuke continues his physical assault on Yoroi; smashing him into the ground with the last kick of an imitation of Rock Lee’s Lion Combo. Then, just as quickly as it began, Sasuke is named the victor and will move on to the final matches.

It is then revealed that the secret to Sasuke’s imitation was his ability to use the Sharingan to observe movements, namely when he had fought Lee before. Because Sasuke was able to use Lee’s moves, Sasuke accredits his victory to Lee. This result brings Lee and Gai sensei to acknowledge Sasuke’s abilities, and also Sasuke’s similarities to the young Kakashi.

Medics, then, offer to take Sasuke to be taken care of, but Kakashi has other plans for his recovery: taking care of the cursed seal, for now.

Now, the next match will immediately start between Zaku Abumi and Aburame Shino. Sakura, then remembers that Zaku had his arms broken by Sasuke during the second exam. Shino forewarns Zaku of the danger that awaits those who fight against Shino, but Zaku charges forward, and with a sound attack, topples Shino.

In another part of the building, Sasuke is being tended to by Kakshi by means of techniques and writings in blood. This painful ceremony is said, by Kakshi, to ease the burden of the cursed seal, and to lock it away using the Evil Supressor. However, there is one catch: Sasuke must willingly keep the suppressor active, or else the cursed seal will reactivate.

Just then, a mysterious figure appears behind Kakshi; the figure belongs to Orochimaru, who has now revealed himself to be closer to the exam than anyone had anticipated.
